The final breakthrough of the ambitious Zojila Tunnel project has emerged as a historic milestone in India’s infrastructure and mountain engineering journey.
Stretching 13.153 kilometres, the Zojila Tunnel is set to become the world’s longest single-tube bi-directional road tunnel located at such a high altitude. The project is being developed in the strategically important Zojila region between Baltal in Sonamarg and Meenamarg near Drass and Kargil in the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
Positioned at an elevation of approximately 11,578 feet above sea level, the tunnel is one of India’s most challenging infrastructure projects due to the harsh Himalayan terrain, extreme weather conditions, heavy snowfall, and avalanche-prone zones.
The tunnel is being constructed to provide all-weather connectivity between Kashmir Valley and Ladakh a region that remains cut off for several months every year during winter because of snow accumulation and dangerous road conditions along the Zojila Pass.
Officials and infrastructure experts have described the breakthrough as a major engineering achievement that will significantly improve transportation, military logistics, tourism, trade, and emergency connectivity in the region.
Once operational, the tunnel is expected to drastically reduce travel time between Sonamarg and Drass while improving road safety and ensuring uninterrupted movement throughout the year.
