Union Minister Nitin Gadkari says regulations allowing the legal use of 100% ethanol have been finalized, paving the way for a new generation of flex-fuel vehicles in India.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has announced that regulations permitting the legal use of 100% ethanol as a vehicle fuel have been finalized, marking a significant milestone in India’s efforts to promote alternative and cleaner fuels.
Speaking at a public event in Maharashtra, Gadkari said he recently approved the regulatory framework required to authorize the use of pure ethanol-powered vehicles in the country. He described the move as a major step towards reducing India’s dependence on conventional fossil fuels and imported crude oil.
According to Gadkari, flex-fuel technology is expected to play a key role in India’s future mobility ecosystem. He noted that vehicle manufacturers have already begun developing models capable of operating on higher ethanol blends and pure ethanol fuel.
The minister highlighted examples of ethanol-compatible vehicles showcased by leading automobile companies and expressed confidence that more manufacturers would introduce flex-fuel options in the coming years.
Gadkari has consistently advocated for ethanol, biofuels, electric mobility, and hydrogen-powered transportation as part of India’s long-term strategy to reduce emissions, lower fuel import bills, and support domestic agriculture through increased ethanol production.
In addition to ethanol-based mobility, Gadkari also spoke about ongoing efforts to expand hydrogen-powered transportation. He revealed plans for a hydrogen-based public transport pilot project in Nagpur, which is expected to serve as a model for future clean-energy transit systems.
The government has been actively encouraging the adoption of alternative fuels through ethanol blending programmes, flex-fuel vehicle policies, and investments in green mobility technologies.
Industry experts believe wider adoption of ethanol-powered vehicles could provide consumers with additional fuel choices while supporting India’s broader energy security and environmental objectives.
The announcement is expected to generate significant interest across the automobile sector as manufacturers prepare for the next phase of alternative-fuel vehicle development in India.
